Total ankle replacement is an operation to replace a worn-out ankle joint by resurfacing the ends of your tibia and talus with metal components with a plastic insert in between them to allow gliding motion. Most ankle replacements feature a mobile component that moves forward and backward somewhat during ankle motion. This mobile component is typically constructed of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (hard-wearing plastic) and lies freely between the talar and tibial components. Two-component or fixed-bearing ankle replacements, in which the plastic is fixed to the tibial component, are several types of ankle replacements. No one can definitively say whether a fixed-bearing or mobile-bearing implant is superior, so you should examine your options with your surgeon. There are currently more than 11 different prostheses available, but as none of them have a certain benefit over the others at this time, we advise talking with your surgeon about your options.
