Total ankle replacement or total ankle arthroplasty is a procedure of replacing a damaged joint or parts of the ankle with plastic or metal components called prosthetics. The ankle joint is commonly affected by arthritis and this surgery is known to treat ankle arthritis. A total ankle replacement surgery is mostly done in an inpatient setup. General anesthesia is administered to the patient. Once the area is numbed, the orthopedic surgeon makes an incision through the skin and muscle in the front side of the ankle and removes the deformed bones and cartilages. The removed spaces are now filled with metal joints and are attached to the remaining active bones with the help of a special type of bone cement. After the bones are held together, the surgeon checks if the motion of the bones is glided properly and may insert pieces of plastics between the joint surfaces if needed. Soon after completing this procedure, the surgeon repairs the muscles, and the incision in the skin is sewn back. A splint is applied at the end of the procedure. This surgery usually takes two and half hours and the patient will be discharged from the hospital in two days if there are no further complications.
